Ammonium sulfate — short summary
Ammonium sulfate is a simple salt factories use to purify vaccine proteins (diphtheria toxoid, tetanus toxoid, CRM₁₉₇). They add a lot of it so the protein clumps out of the liquid (“salting-out”). FDA inserts name that step for shots like Daptacel, Adacel, Pentacel, Quadracel, Tenivac, MenQuadfi, ActHIB, and Prevnar-class CRM products. Afterward, the process is supposed to wash the salt away. Intent to remove it is not a published leftover measurement.
It usually does not show up as a “contains X mcg” line on final-formulation tables. Inserts often name the manufacturing step and skip a residual microgram number — while they do list numbers for leftovers like formaldehyde. No public FDA/EMA/WHO infant injection limit for residual ammonium sulfate turned up. Food “safe to eat” findings do not equal a baby-shot residual standard.
The body handles ammonium and sulfate in other settings. That is context, not proof an unquantified leftover in an infant’s intramuscular dose was studied and cleared — alone or mixed with aluminum, formaldehyde leftovers, or other residuals. Those partnerships were not found as published infant studies.
Bottom line: process role is clear; residual dose is usually undisclosed; infant injection safety for that residual is largely unstudied. Silence in an unstudied corner is not evidence of safety. For some kids (preemies, metabolic/liver/kidney vulnerability, stacked same-day shots), leftover salt ions are a sharper personal question.
